Initially available in three varietals - Chardonnay, Cinsault and Merlot - and with an rrp around £2.49, the firm sees opportunities for the Singlz concept to thrive at outdoor events, on trains, in hotel mini-bars or even in pubs that don't carry a wide wine selection. Les Grands Chais has already had some success with its Villa Cardini label in the PET glasses. The European distribution rights for Singlz are owned by Spanish firm Inova International.
Ted Sandbach, managing director of the Oxford Wine Company, has listed the product and is currently conducting a trial with the wines.
UK director of Les Grands Chais Tim North, told Harpers.co.uk it would be looking at feedback for Les Vignerons before considering expanding distribution nationwide.
North said Les Grands Chais is about to begin harvesting in France - with some white varietals in the south scheduled to come in next week.
He forecast a normal sized vintage for France, but added that "it varies quite a bit by region". The Minervois was badly affected by hail, so prices there are expected to rise, while most extremes will be felt in smaller appellations such as Pommard, according to North. "What we're looking to do is develop projects in our portfolio where there is good availability at a good price", and to move people away from areas where availability is weak, North said.
"We're hoping for good weather in the next couple of weeks as there is a bit of rot started in some places. If it carries on raining it could be a difficult vintage, but if it's fine it will be a good one," added North.
Earlier this year, North told Harpers.co.uk about its plans to release a number of wine-based drinks, including a Merlot mixed with cola, as it looks to capitalise on the growing interest in fruit-based and innovative sparkling wine products both in France and overseas.
Last month Norfolk's Broadland Wineries also signed a deal to produce the Singlz glasses, which it will fill with its own wines from Britain and the New World.
