Importer Liberty Wines has added two more projects from well-known winemaker Telmo Rodríguez. Also joining its Spanish portfolio is Valencia’s Javi Revert as well as Rías Baixas’s Forjas del Salnés.
Telmo Rodríguez’s Rueda Verdejo wines Basa and El Transistor are fresh additions to Liberty’s list. The former the first white wine made by Rodríguez and his partner Pablo Eguzkiza using Verdejo and Viura. El Transistor is made from low-yielding bush vines of Verdejo, fermented for six months in a combination of oak and concrete eggs.
His Gago wines also arrive on the Liberty portfolio. These are produced in Toro, with the Dehesa Gago wine being a 100% Tinta de Toro (or Tempranillo), while the Pago La Jara wine is made from ungrafted vines that are over 100 years old.
Liberty Wines portfolio director Lucy Perbellini explained that “Telmo Rodríguez has had a huge influence on Spanish winemaking and can be credited with planting the seeds of the country's ‘New Wave’”.
She added: “Taking a minimalist approach in the winery, geared towards the expression of site rather than the hand of the winemaker, Telmo's wines are marked by vitality, definition and sense of place.”
Newcomer to the portfolio, Javi Revert (pictured), was integral in reviving Valenica’s old vineyards and local varieties (including the Arcos grape). His small production wines are made from old bush vines around La Font de la Figuera – Revert’s home village.
Forjas del Salnés is a Galician Albariño project from respected winemaker Rodrigo ‘Rodri’ Méndez. The project’s name is an homage to his grandfather Francisco Méndez – a local grape grower and blacksmith who helped form the the Rías Baixas appellation in the 1980s. His 12ha of vineyards includes the 180-year-old 'Finca Genoveva' site.
Perbellini said that “Javi Revert and Rodri Méndez are shining lights in their respective regions”, noting that the pair champion “indigenous varieties, traditional methods and site-specific winemaking”.
